What you will need before you start

Have these ready before you start. If you are missing something, you can still start and send it later.

  1. 1Your dog’s diagnosis. Check it against the definitions below.
  2. 2Veterinary records. These should show the diagnosis, the Schirmer tear rating and every vet visit for the period you’re requesting support for.
  3. 3Vet bills you’ve already paid. Include invoices from your vet or ophthalmologist, along with proof of payment, such as a bank statement.
  4. 4Pet insurance details. It isn’t possible to receive support for costs your insurer has already paid. We can, however, consider any excess you’ve paid and any increase, or expected increase, to your premium as a result of the claim. Please include proof of any excess payments and details of your current policy cost.
  5. 5Proof of purchase. If you bought through years.com, just give us the email address on your account. If you bought from Amazon or in a shop, include your receipt or, if you don’t have it, a bank statement showing the purchase.
  6. 6Verification. To protect the programme for every family who needs it, we check all documents thoroughly. We’ll need final invoices rather than quotes or pro forma invoices, and we’ll confirm details directly with your veterinary practice.

Who we can support

The support programme is open to dogs who meet the following, confirmed with their veterinary records:

  • Sudden bilateral dry eye diagnosis with Schirmer rating 5 or below
  • Dry eye diagnosis with Schirmer rating 10 or below
  • Purchased Years between 1 March and 17 August
  • Diagnosis verified with veterinary records, and directly with your veterinary practice
  • Schirmer tear test results must have been recorded by a vet or veterinary professional

Sudden bilateral dry eye diagnosis

The current publicly available definition from the BrAVO working group.

  • Sudden severe onset with no prior dry eye
  • Schirmer tear rating 5 or below
  • Unresponsive to traditional treatment

Dry eye diagnosis

Wider than the BrAVO definition, so that more dogs can be supported.

  • No prior dry eye
  • Schirmer tear rating 10 or below
